Chapter 43

June 8th, Tuesday

WAS IT SMART meeting fits? Shana entered the Stage Deli later that afternoon, regretting turning down lunch with Mac for this. The aroma of the coffee, various scents of lunch meat, and fresh-baked donuts filled the air. Busy with several business types placing their specialty coffee and sandwich orders, it surprised her to find an empty table in the back.

Shana ordered a cappuccino while she waited for Fits. He sounded desperate when he called her this morning. She couldn’t help but feel sorry for him and wondered what he wanted to tell her.

A girl served her coffee and Shana reached to her inside jacket pocket for her bi-fold wallet for payment. When she replaced the wallet, her fingers touched the plastic tampon applicator and brought to mind the embarrassing moment when she first became Fits’s partner years ago.

Back then she had carried her personal items in the jacket side pockets. At her first homicide crime scene, she’d pulled out latex gloves, and a tampon fell on the ground near the victim. Fits retrieved it and discreetly handed it back to her. She recalled the panic when she returned to homicide and thought for sure there would be teasing. But nothing happened. That incident caused her to have pockets sewn inside all her on-the-job jackets.

Fits made his way through the crowd and pulled out a chair. “Hi, Doyle. I’m glad you agreed to see me. How are you doing? I mean after the break-in.”

“I’m fine.”

A middle-aged man walked over to the table. “Hey Russell, you going to be at the next Big Brothers meeting?”

“Sure. See you later,” Fits said.

The man smiled and walked to the counter.

Shana stared at Fits. Maybe there’s more to this guy than she thought. “Big Brothers?”

“Yeah.”

“Why didn’t I know this?”

“I don’t like to brag.”

“Brag!” Shana’s eyes widened. “You can brag about your conquests, but not about something as important as you volunteering for Big Brothers?”

He lowered his head. “I should stop bragging about my ladies.”

“You think? Not sure I should’ve agreed to meet you.”

“I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t. I’ve been a real idiot…lately.”

She rolled her eyes. “Lately!”

“Okay, I deserve that. But I have something to tell you.”

“This better be good.” Shana raised the cup to her lips.

“It is, Shana.”

She cocked her head and took a sip of coffee.

“Haven’t called you that in years, have I?”

“No. What’s this all about?”

Fits rested his arms on the table. “I have some information about the Detweiler case.”

Shana crossed her arms. “What about it?”

“I was watching Law and Order—”

“Hold on, Fits.” She unfolded her arms. “If you’re going to tell me about a cop show, I’m out of here.”

“No…No. Wait. That didn’t come out right.”

Shana scowled. “Get to the point.”

“All right. But first I want to say I don’t blame Sarge for putting me on desk duty. He gave me a simple task to investigate your neighbor after the break-in, and I messed up. After he gave me a good talking to yesterday, I was pissed at myself for screwing up again.
